John Wooden’s Gift From His Father!

I’m reading this fascinating first-person story of UCLA’s brilliant basketball coach today, and I like to share few things that made me think about my own father, who coached me during my young age in my home country.

In John Wooden’s book, “They Call Me Coach” he talks about 7 rules:

In Centerton, Indiana, John Wooden received a gift from his father: a two-dollar bill. More important, Joshua Hugh Wooden also gave his son a 3 x 5 card on which he had written what would become the fourth navigation point:

“Seven Suggestions to Follow”
1. Be true to yourself.
2. Help others.
3. Make each day your masterpiece.
4. Drink deeply from good books—including the Good Book.
5. Make friendship a fine art.
6. Build a shelter against a rainy day.
7. Pray for guidance, count and give thanks for your blessings every day.

John Wooden is frequently cited as an example of a values- based leader, one whose positive and productive principles were intrinsically woven into his system. What he did on the court reflected who he was off the court. Who he was, and is, is a direct reflection of the basic teachings of his father, Joshua Hugh Wooden, and the compass he gave his son for navigat- ing through life and leadership.

***A Simple Recipe for Teamwork: It is amazing how much we can accomplish if no one cares who gets the credit.

*** A leader must accomplish the difficult task of getting those on the team to believe that “we” supersedes “me.”

*** In fact, there are no “big” things, only an accumulation of little things done well.

The Power of Faith!

Faith without action is delusion. Faith does not wait for miracles but produces them. If you think you can or if you think you can’t, you are right.

–Henry Ford

We all have low moments, we all fall down and get hurt. We all have moments when we doubt ourselves and get into self-pity. The point is to overcome these feelings and restore your faith.

There are three kinds of people in this world:

• People who make things happen

• People who watch things happen

• People who wonder what happened

Personal Responsibility!

It’s been said over and over again. Freedom isn’t free. The reason we can enjoy freedom is because someone was responsible. Leaders led. People worked. Soldiers fought. Many died. Freedom came with a price. I believe the best way to summarize that price in a word is responsibility. Freedom and responsibility always go together. The best years of MY life are the ones in which I decide MY problems are MY own problems. I do not blame them on MY mother, the ecology, or the president or the economy. I realize that I control MY own destiny…Transformation begins with ME.

Happy 4th of July!

It was 237 years ago that we declared our independence as a country. Today, we share in this privilege of liberty to make our own choices. As I reflect on what this means to me, I am Grateful to make my own choices – Free to make plans so that I can succeed – and choose Independence from excuses. I wish you and your families the joy and safety in celebrating the 4th of July.

Things That Require No Talent:

20130630-074945.jpg

I was listening to a leadership Podcast this morning from my good friend John Maxwell and this is what I learned…

Things That Require No Talent:

There are lots of things in life that will help you excel that have nothing to do with talent. You see most people discount themselves for not being as talented as the next person. But what truly puts you at the top of the game is not talent alone, it’s the things that don’t require talent that will get you there.

Here is my list of things that do not require talent:

Passion – Passion will take you a long way, get you through closed doors and sustain you longer than the next person and it does not require talent.

Initiative – You will not get very far without initiative. It is the one thing that will push you further then you have ever been before. Initiative ignites talent and the absence of initiative defuses it.

Teachability – Often a talented person will not listen to those around them because they rely so strongly on their talent. This makes them unteachable. You don’t have to have talent to be teachable, you just have to have a desire to be the best you can possibly be. Be open to teaching, correction and discipline, it will separate you from the pack.

Positive Attitude – The right attitude doesn’t cost anything and requires no specific skill, yet it can literally set the course for your life and for your work. Have a winning attitude it cost nothing but pays back great dividends.

Courage – The courage to act, to take risk, to move forward and to step out has nothing to do with your skill set or talent, it has to do with a choice. Ask yourself what kind of person you’ll be, courageous or cowardly.

Focus – People who are focused get things done. Talent will not get it done for you, talent will not help you complete a task or mission, but focus (a non-talent characteristic) is what will help you get it done and then some.

Dreaming Big – No one can stop you from dreaming big. It takes no talent to dream big.

It takes more than talent to be a “Talent Plus” person. You have to put choices beside your talent in order to succeed in life.

Transformational Leadership, Day 2

Another wonderful day here in Guatemala.

The Guatemalan people are so hungry for this transformation in their nation. It is humbling and a serious feeling of unworthiness I feel as I prepare to meet these souls. I don’t know why God has chosen me to do this work but the transformation that is about to begin happening with the Guatemalans has already begun in me. Every moment of this trip thus far has been a divine confirmation and intervention. I can’t even describe what has been happening. Not just to me but this entire team. I have met some great people from around the word that it would be almost impossible to meet if I wasn’t here in Guatemala this week. I’m speechless and feel so blessed.

Transformational Leadership (My Journey with John Maxwell To Guatemala)

I am honored to join over 140 of my Colleagues, Coaches and Dr. John Maxwell this week to make our way to Guatemala to train more than 20,000 Guatemalan leaders on the Transformational Leadership. The participating Guatemalan leaders represent a cross-section of seven different streams of influence; government, business, education, etc…at all levels. The need for transformation exists when people groups experience unnecessary suffering. Currently in Guatemala, half of children living there suffer from chronic malnutrition resulting in stunted growth and lowered IQ scores. It has the highest rate of child malnutrition in Latin America. I’m excited to be part of this mission. Please keep us in your prayers. This is just the beginning… Thank you!

Throughout the trip I will be updating my blog. Here’s some more info on the trip:

The 15 Invaluable Laws of Growth

John C. Maxwell , speaker, communicator, pastor and author of over 60 books on leadership, inspires us for the journey through the fifteen invaluable laws of growth. I read it and I really loved it!

This third book in John Maxwell’s Laws series (following 2-million seller The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership and The 17 Indisputable Laws of Teamwork) will help you become a learner and eventually a successful leader in life. When you are growing you are a much happier person with larger influence, with impact to people around you. The first step, however, is to make a conscious choice to grow yourself and that will boost your happiness.

John describes principles that help increase personal development and growth, explaining how to see existing value while still adding more and how to eliminate the tension between where you are and where you could be. This book is not about building a team, however, it’s about growing YOURSELF and the 15 laws of growth. Growth requires self-discipline and starts right here, right now! Here are the 15 laws of growth for your review:

  • The Law of Intentionality: Growth Doesn’t Just Happen.
  • The Law of Awareness: You Must Know Yourself to Grow Yourself.
  • The Law of the Mirror: You must See Value in Yourself to Add Value to Yourself.
  • The Law of Reflection: Learning to Pause Allows Growth to Catch Up with You.
  • The Law of Consistency: Motivation Gets you Going – Discipline Keeps You Growing.
  • The Law of Environment: Growth Thrives in Conducive Surroundings.
  • The Law of Design: To Maximize Growth, Develop Strategies.
  • The Law of Pain: Good Management of Bad Experiences Leads to Great Growth.
  • The Law of the Ladder: Character Growth Determines the Height of Your Personal Growth.
  • The Law of the Rubber Band: Growth Stops When You Lose the Tension Between Where You Are and Where You Could Be.
  •  The Law of Trade-Offs: You have to Give up to Grow Up.
  • The Law of Curiosity: Growth is Stimulated by asking Why?
  • The Law of Modeling: It’s Hard to Improve When You Have No One But Yourself to Follow.
  • The Law of Expansion: Growth Always Increases Your Capacity.
  • The Law of Contribution: Growing Yourself Enables You to Grow Others.

What is the cost of unfulfilled potential? It’s definitely very costly. I see that and I must strive every day to be the best I can every single day. If I don’t do that, then not only do I have unfulfilled potential, I am unfulfilled potential. This life is so short and so precious. We are all here for some purpose as unique as we are. The cost of this unfulfilled potential is so high. The best way I can put it is that “we miss out on our reason for being here”. I live my life as fully as I can because I believe that’s the most positive, meaningful way I can live it. Moreover, I live my life as fully as I can because I want to be sure I don’t get to the end of it with unfulfilled potential…I suggest to you that if there is unfulfilled potential in your life, do something to begin fulfilling it TODAY! The 15 Invaluable Laws of Growth can be a great start!
